Also called The Battle Of Typhoon of Steel or Tetsu no ame (Violent Wind of Steel) in Japanese. These designations refer to the ferocity and brutality of the fighting, the intensity of the fire, and the enormous number of Allied ships and armored vehicles that stormed the island. The battle turned out to be one of those that had the most casualties, civilian and military, in the entire Pacific campaign. The total number of deaths exceeds a quarter of a million.
We commemorate with this piece the heroes fallen in combat in such a fierce battle.
