The first living being in space

As little was known about the effects that spaceflight could produce on living things at the time of Laika’s mission and, suborbital technology had not yet been developed, there was no expectation that Laika would survive. Some scientists believed that humans could not survive launch or outer space conditions, which is why flight engineers saw animal flights as the necessary precursors to human missions.
